Build Your People

TL;DR (Quick Start)

  • Find one place where you see the same people every week.
  • Say hi first event when it feels awkward
  • Know one Baylor person you can ask for help

Why this Matters

  • Your first year at Baylor is not meant to be a solo experience. Students who build strong relationships early with friends, mentors, faculty and staff are more likely to feel connected, supported and confident navigating challenges. Belonging doesn't happen overnight, but small, intentional steps make a big difference.
  • Start here at Baylor:
    • Student Activities -- Exploring student organizations and campus involvement
    • Campus Living & Learning -- Building community in your residence hall

High-Impact Actions

  • Get plugged in to one consistent community
    • Join a student organization, residence hall activity, or small group where you'll see the same people regularly.
  • Baylor supports this through:
    • Student Activities & Student Organizations
    • Residence Hall programming through Campus Living & Learning
  • Introduce yourself first -- more than once!
    • Most students are hoping someone else will start the conversations. Taking the initiative builds confidence and connection.
  • Helpful Baylor Touchpoints:
    • Welcome Week events
    • CLs and Peer Leaders
  • Identify at least one "go-to" person
    • This could be a roommate, CL, Resident Chaplain, peer mentor, professor, or staff member -- someone you can ask questions without hesitation.
  • Great first options at Baylor:
    • Your CL or Hall Director
    • Your NSE instructor
    • Your Academic Advisor

    • Talk with your CL or Residence Chaplain
    • Connect with the Program Manager for any special populations you are part of (first gen, transfer, veteran, etc.)
